Archie Shepp & Niels Henning-Ørsted Pedersen - Looking At Bird (1981)
At the time of this writing this album has 7 ratings on RYM. When I posted this on my old blog I am pretty sure it had two. I don’t know why this album is so unheard of, according to amazon it was recently re-issued to CD so unavailability should not be to blame. I guess the biggest turn off of this album is the lack of a drummer, but NHOP is so skilled and swings so hard it doesn’t need one - between Archie Shepp’s smooth as silk tone and Pedersen’s need to use every technique possible on each song, this record would be too much with a drummer. And if you are still not sold let me put it this way - this is possibly the best interpretation of Bird tunes since Charlie Parker.
